[This is a nice song for beginners. There three aspirated consonants here: "gha", "bha", and "dha". ఘ, భ, ధ. First learn to puff air, put out a candle, or fill a balloon. Then try to combine the soft 'ga' with expelling of air. To master these hard emphatic consonants, deliberately utter words like ఘటము, ఘటోత్కచుడు, సుభద్ర, ధారణ, ధాత్రి ten, twenty, or thirty times. Practice it several days. This is the advice (I am paraphrasing from memory) from Dr. Balamuralikrishna: "We cannot distort the words. Musicality and fluency with words (lyrics, సాహిత్యము) should coexist." This song has in-built rhythm and melody. When you understand each word and sing with pure emotion (of bhakti), it automatically comes out great.]

(The Telugu script with English transliteration was generated by Lekhini. I’ve listened to the timeless renderings  by Bhanumati Ramakrishna and Dr. Balamurali. Also I have benefited enormously from Ms. Mutya Syama Sundari’s compilation. The Sanskrit Devanagari script is given here for the Hindi speaking North Indians. There are differences between Telugu and Sanskrit alphabets. So naturally some errors creep into the lyrics in Sanskrit. In Telugu we have short and long vowel for “o”, but it is not so in Sanskrit; unlike Hindi most of the words in Telugu do not end with truncated consonant sounds, Cf. घर, मधुर. Some years ago I posted a word-to-word meaning for this composition at Sulekha website; it was titled as “Jatayu, Ramayana, and Tyagaraju”. Though it attracted 2.5k readers and several comments, still I am not satisfied with it. Despite a plethora of comments, analyses, and regurgitated views, sadly nobody bothered to delve deeply and get to the “true intent” of the composer. I will post an update to the original Sulekha article very soon.)

(First respects to many: Parents, particulary the gifted original vocal singer - our mother. Then there are a number of Carnatic music stalwarts, from Dr. Balamurali, Maharajapuram, Balakrishna Prasad, GNB, and extraordinary vocalists like Ghantasala, P. Susheela, and P. Leela and many others. In one way or other, they’ve helped me a lot, they made me realize my own inner voice and recognize the faults in lyrics. I must also pay my debt to the great music directors like S. Rajeswara Rao, Nagendra, Aswathama, Ramesh Naidu, etc. Through out my high school and college years, my neighborhood reverberated with rich sound; there was plenty of noise from traffic, blaring movie songs played from theaters, and the rich music played at marriage ceremonies and street processions. They troubled me during my annual summer exams and yet times we students lamented our plight for the lack of “a suitable noise police”. But looking back I could not ask for a more indulgent music teacher. Hundreds of sweet melodies, haunting tragic pathos filled emotional slow moving songs, and exhilarating and energy filled throaty uplifting patriotic songs. All that music training was given to me as a free lunch and I just gobbled it up hungrily. I owe my native village, the coastal Andhra, and Delhi for a great exposure to all that there is in Carnatic, light music, and Hindusthani traditions. You cannot learn such a great expanse of varied music from a single teacher, paid or unpaid.)
