Lyrics of "Nidhi Chala Sukhama"

నిధి చాల సుఖమా రాముని
న్నిధి సేవ సుఖమా నిజముగ బల్కు మనసా

(I came to this famous kirtana while searching for a Kalyani raga song in Telugu. I've tried to learn the music, phrases, and meaning (భావము, ఆవేదన)  via Dr. Balamurali, M.S., and U. Srinivas. And how can I forget Padmashri Chittoor V. Nagaiah and the B/W Tyagayya movie. He gave a very natural flowing rendering of this kirtana. 

There is a hard "dha" (ధ) and an aspirated "tha" (థ) in this song. The former phrase (దధి) refers to curd (yogurt) in Sanskrit. In the next line we come across "dasarathi" - another name of Sri Rama. It means the son of king Dasaratha. We should take proper care in uttering these 'hard' sounding consonants. I'll post explanation of this profound composition later. 

There are several ways (schemes) to transliterate Telugu script into English. Sometimes I use the one offered by Google while composing emails and articles. But it is not easy and fast; for fast typists and adepts with multiple languages, it is too cumbersome and slow. Lots of back and forth typing, choosing, and correcting. Other free softwares (ex: Lekhini) are more efficient. People who are proficient with both Telugu script and English transliteration(s) can travel between several schemes without any difficulty. But beginners must be careful. Otherwise errors will creep in and that is a "no-no" in the context of music compositions, poetry, lyrics, essays, and literature. Without proper grounding in languages we cannot appreciate Carnatic music, a discourse, or a valuable benediction.) Copyright 2020
